Blue Light

Blue Light Contemporary

1. Suppose I were to begin by saying that I had fallen in love with a color. Suppose I were to speak this as though it were a confession; suppose I shredded my napkin as we spoke. It began slowly. An appreciation, an affinity. Then one day, it became more serious. Then (looking into an empty teacup, its bottom stained with thin brown excrement coiled into the shape of a sea horse) it became somehow personal.

2. And so, I fell in love with a color—in this case, the color blue—as if falling under a spell, a spell I fought to stay under and get out from under, in turns.

Bluets ~ Maggie Nelson

Blue Light

…occurs naturally during the Blue Hour which refers to a transitional stage from civil to nautical twilight when the geometric center of the sun is between 6° and 12° below the horizon. At this time the residual, indirect sunlight takes on a predominantly blue shade. It is a fleeting time of day, featuring a quality of light cherished by photographers.

Collection

The Blue Light Contemporary Collection is currently housed in the Photography Area of the Department of Art + Design at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. We are primarily focused on showcasing work made from the turn of the millennium to the present day by established and emerging contemporary photographers as well as photo-based artists, critics, and intellectuals. The collection has been created in an effort to introduce students and our campus community to the highest quality contemporary photo-based imagery. The goal of the collection is not only to educate a new generation of photographers but also to provide opportunities for students and emerging photographers to exhibit alongside more established image-makers.
